World Refugee Day, June 20, 2008

Friday, June 20, marks World Refugee Day - the 7th annual universal salute to the courage and strength of millions of refugees.

Angelina Jolie's Tribute to RefugeesEducation Partnership Co-Chair and UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador Angelina Jolie released an online video message on Wednesday to raise awareness about this special day. Jolie stated, "They have survived war, they have survived displacement, they have survived rape, they have survived hunger and disease. For those who have survived and for those who did not, we are thinking of you on this day."

Events are being held by EPCC partners worldwide. To raise awareness and support, UNHCR has recreated refugee life in 20 capitals worldwide by setting up tents, a classic symbol of protection, and various exhibits. The International Rescue Committee has organized events for refugees in Chad, Kenya, Nepal, Thailand, and the United States.

This year's World Refugee Day theme is "protection". We must remember our duty to protect a child's right to learn, especially when they are faced with the challenges of conflict and violence. The average length of a refugee's displacement is 17 years - interrupting education for entire generations who will one day need skills and tools to rebuild their nations.

Aghan refugee boy in campWe know the benefits of education for these children. School is a powerful, stabilizing, hope-inspiring force. By protecting a refugee child's right to education, we increase their prospects for a peace-filled future. Schooling keeps children from joining militias and other illicit activities. It teaches peaceful, life-sustaining habits.

About half of the children not in school around the world live in countries affected by conflict. We would like to take this time to honor these brave, young refugees across the world on World Refugee Day and recommit to our pledge to rebuild hope through education.
